MINOR CEMETERY

Marion County, Missouri

The Minor Private Cemetery is a small cemetery off old 61 Highway west of Hannibal. Its listings can be found at the Hannibal, Missouri, Library in a “Red Folder.” The “Red Folder” says that the property is owned by Marion Parker. Where library listings I copied differ from the inscriptions, they are noted. When I visited it in the early 1980s, it was difficult to find. We stopped and asked a gentleman for directions, and it happened that the man owned the property where the cemetery is located. We trudged through the barnyard and through a field (it was spring and very muddy), finally climbing the hill to the little cemetery, enclosed by a rusting fence. As might be expected, the old cemetery was in fair condition, having been dutifully (if not obsessively) cared for by the property owner. The headstones were old and some were very hard to read. The owner told us there had been burials in the cemetery in his memory (the newest stone we found is dated 1946). He further told us that there was another road they used to bring the casket in for burial (fine time to tell us that – maybe the barnyard and field were a test of integrity we had to pass before being allowed on the property!).
